SU equivalent of wiki's "soapbox" rule?   11-15>|

While it's occasionally funny to stumble a page that has been intentionally mis-categorized to make a point, it gets irritating after a while. It's a common tactic that generally mucks things up. Example: the AIDS category.

So, can we get some form of written notice about this, maybe in the community rules?

It is in the rules tags are for personal use.

If you observe members blatantly mis-using the categories in this manner, please do report them to us (via Feedback) and we will take appropriate action.

It's not big, and it's not clever. It causes the miscat team work, and does nothing to improve the quality of our stumbles.

With regard to using personal tags: regrettably some do choose to use them in a destructive or offensive manner. This is *your* community - we'd prefer that you were free to use your tags as you wish, but if you feel that some "terms" were developed to control that, then we'd be interested to hear. The StumbleUpon group would be a good forum for such a discussion.

5: The thing is, it's a "tip" - not a "rule" or even a "guideline."

If I get a tip for the 2:30 donkey race, or a tip to buy a particular stock, I take it more or less as a guideline.

I think the first two paragraphs at (6) are a fair and reasonable summation.
Tags are a very useful tool and any hard and fast rules would undoubtedly reduce their value. I would prefer to let common sense be the rule (and to see action taken on reported deliberate tagging mischief).

People sometimes confuse 'tags' with 'topics' and this can make discussion about both subjects difficult.

Regarding deliberate miscatting, I've seen a few examples of people wrongfully accused of doing this. This brings me to a point I feel is important - free speech. People often cry 'libel' on the internet but 'offensive' and also 'objectionable' are subjective; lies - by which I mean deliberate untruths - are not. The issue of enforcing rules to the tagging system therefore is complex.

The point raised in #1 was regarding topics, not tags.

I often have trouble finding the right category for a site because the word I want just isn't in the list. And sometimes it's hard to decide which of several possible categories to use.

I have never checked whether any categories I chose were afterwards changed. But it would certainly be useful to be notified if it happens, so next time one can choose the right category immediately.
